Danays, the Master Cigar Sommelier

Dear Danays, thank you for joining us! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Danays Leon Potolinca di Sperlinga,
I’m from Cuba and currently living in Europe. Some years ago I decided to dive into the wine, spirits, and Habanos world moved by my childhood memories, the smoke of my father’s cigars and the smell lingering in my grandmother’s town, where the first Havana Club Distillery was located and still is.

In Cuba, I became a Sommelier and Habano Sommelier, sometime after, I was certified as Master Cigar Sommelier by the International Association of Cigar Sommeliers and appointed by it, as Ambassador and certified instructor for Europe. Now and then, I write articles for cigar magazines. Currently, I’m the host of “SmokenTalk”, an Instagram live podcast born last year during the confinement period due to the Covid 19. Its purpose is to create a relaxed and enriching learning context, and bring enthusiasts and professionals closer to the experience of those persons who play a key role in the cigar world.

My husband and I own Sperlinga Tobacco company, our cigar passion has driven us into the venture of creating our cigar brand which will be launched in the second half of this year.

What does a great cigar experience look like for you?

I believe that the experience of smoking a cigar can be great by achieving a harmonious assemblage of cigars, drinks, and atmosphere meaning: the place, the colors of the surroundings, light, temperature, music and last but most important: the company, this can make it unforgettable.

Do you have any unusual habits when it comes to enjoying cigars?

As a Cigar Sommelier, pairing cigars and drinks is essential—this I very much enjoy, though in a more frequent fashion I have found myself escorting my cigars just with water.

Have a substantial meal before smoking

is one suggestion I can make to all cigars smokers and especially beginners. I usually do, but… smoking cigars also makes me hungry, so I must eat something after as well!

What made you become an ambassador of Light ‘em Up GO?

I could not refuse the invitation of Reinhard for whom I feel respect and admiration for his passion, knowledge, and creativity. I believe that any idea coming from him is worth supporting.

Do you get asked a lot “Where can I smoke”, or “Where can I buy”?

Certainly, those are frequent questions I’m asked! Also—quite often when traveling—I search on internet for places and events about the cities to visit and the information provided by some sources are not always up to date. I always try to be well informed and sometimes it’s hard.

Who do you think should know about Light ‘em Up GO?

All cigar smokers, but not exclusively! I have run into some non-cigar smokers buying cigars for someone they care or love. They will find relevant online stores and Brick & Mortars to make great purchasing decisions!

You already had a look behind the scenes, what are you hyped about?

About the knowledge, passion, and drive by the creators of Light ‘em Up in bringing together our wonderful community.

Danays, it is a pleasure to have you on board and supporting us, we are super excited!
